Inside (Self portraits)

Inside (Self portraits)

I returned to photography with primarily making self portraits after taking a seven year break from it. I wanted to do something more meaningful with my life and found the commercial side of being a photographer too superficial and male-centric. I studied for a diploma in transpersonal integrative psychotherapy but after my studies and working as a psychotherapist I found myself being drawn back to photography (but as an art form rather than the commercial side). Unfortunately the art world is still being dominated by the masculine, however, I do believe more and more female voices are being heard.I am continuously tapping into this rich experience and in-depth investigation into the human psyche as material for self-expression. Through the work I have done on myself during my studies I was shocked to discover just how wounded my own feminine was and with that the Archetype of the feminine.  The making of these self portraits has become a sort of healing ritual, a way of connecting to myself and own feminine energy.

Inside is an exploration of this inner space, the inner landscapes of the psyche. Emphasizing the feminine or anima. The images represent in most part manifestations of emotional and feeling states, making the “Invisible” inner world more visible and expressing a kind of beauty that is not always comfortable. Through my approach to image making a darker element emerges and feels safe to reveal itself. I gaze upon “her” with sensitivity and acceptance, and I invite this same sensitivity from the viewer, an allowance to be touched by both her beauty and her pain.
