A dissident feminine reflection

A dissident feminine reflection

A dissident feminine reflection is an ongoing series of self portraits I have been working on for nearly three years. The making of these self portraits in and of themselves is a sort of healing ritual, a way of connecting to my own feminine energy. As a girl growing up in a patriarchal white afrikaans christian society in South Africa I received countless mirroring that women are less than men. This had quite a lasting and profoundly negative effect on me and how I felt about being female. We are bombarded by confusing images of what women are suppose to look like, be like etc. As a result I become curious about how self image, body image and perceptions of the feminine self becomes distorted through what is being mirrored to us in a society that is so obsessed with the female image. A female image that is still mostly seen through a male perspective. With “A dissident feminine reflection” I am hoping to touch on the intangible and allow the imagination to find space to not just see and be fed an image, idea or belief but be drawn into, feel and discover something more meaningful.
